Its name is in honor of American statesman Henry Clay, member of the United States Senate from Kentucky and United States Secretary of State in the 19th century. As of the census of 2000, there were 7,976 people, 3,379 households, and 2,331 families residing in the county. Its county seat and the only incorporated city in the county is Celina.
